The following is a timeline of Monmouth Beach as it grew as a municipality over the past 100 years.
1900s: MB Fire Company is formed • Borough incorporated (March 9, 1906) • Bill Heitzman elected first mayor • Golf course at Shorelands • MB School opens • MB Association owns substantial property • Farms cover Riverdale, Griffin, Borden, Wesley, West, Raccoon Island and Galilee • MB population under 500.
1910s: Galilee fishermen work our shore • Borough buys Casino and remakes into present Borough Hall • A.O. Johnson is mayor • The oceanfront MB Club is built • Beach property first bought for community benefit • Shorelands Association builds boat dock.
1920s: MB Club House Hotel burns • Borough changes to commission government • First MB library room is opened • First borough tax map is approved • US Post Office established at Beach and Riverdale • Residents complain about fishing smells and noise • Shorelands begins development. • World-class musicians practice in MB.
1930s: Vivian Johnson’s Night Club burns • MB Firemen’s Fair begins • MB native elected to U.S. Senate • MB Herald Newspaper founded • St. Peter’s of Galilee is moved to east side of Ocean Ave. • MBBP badge cost $1.
1940s: Borough planning board is created • Town suffers financial difficulties • West Street boat basin business launched • Trains stop rolling in MB • Nazi U boats sink 24 shore area vessels • V-J Day, 7:05 p.m. siren sounds bringing town wild jubilation • MBFC’s Santa begins visits to homes.
1950s: MBFC Ladies Auxiliary forms • MB First Aid organizes • Boyle family takes over Willow Ave. tavern • A.O. Johnson dies • Borough celebrates 50 years • Fire damages borough hall • N.Y. Yankee players visit MB • Train station torn down • St. Peter’s of Galilee Church burns • MB Police organized as fulltime • Hurricane Carol hits Monmouth Beach.
1960s: MB Library Association is formed and new library is built • MB Recreation Commission formed and Griffin Park developed • Storm destroys old MBBP, new one is built • Channel Club business opens • Precious Blood Church parish center opened • Borough population exceeds 1,000. • Sewerage Authority begins operation.
1970s: Shrewsbury Harbor Estates are built • MB School addition is built • First high-rise condos are opened • Sidney Johnson steps down as mayor • MB First Aid building is built • MB celebrates America’s Bicentennial • Residents oppose 7-Eleven proposal in town. • Borough newsletter begins.
1980s: MB Cold Storage closed • Old MB School is torn down • Sidney Johnson returns as borough commissioner • Annual municipal budget exceeds $1 million • Major fire at Channel Club Tower • Mihm family sells Channel Club interests • MB population reaches 3,300.
1990s: Massive Storm of ‘92 devastates MB • Borough beaches are replenished • New MB Police Station is opened • Beaches are replenished with sand • MB Business Association begins operation • Sodano family sells MB Mart interests.
2000s: MB Cultural Center opens • Sidney Johnson dies • MB School addition is built • First woman (Sue Howard) MB mayor • Sopranos filmed in town • MB Fire Company celebrates 100 years • Karen Ginty is named NJ Teacher of the Year • Jay W. Ross dies • Monmouth Beach celebrates its centennial with exhibit, town parade, barbecue, and fireworks.
